like everyone else.” - Iris Apfel
In celebration of one of our favorite style icons, Iris Apfel, we take a look into her extraordinary life and how she’s inspired the entire fashion industry.
Iris’ fame grew in 2005, when the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art needed pieces for its fall show. Curator Harold Koda asked if she would contribute pieces from her jewelry and clothing collections. The show Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection, was such a success and Iris gained a new level of attention.
In years since the Costume Institute's show, she’s been the subject of a documentary, Iris, directed by Albert Maysles, shot a cover story with Dazed & Confused and she’s even launched her own emojis!
Iris studied art history at NYU and continued her education at the University of Wisconsin, where she attended art school. She’s worked for women’s wear daily, and interior designer Elinor Johnson. Soon after marrying her husband Carl Apfel, they created their own business, a textile firm named Old World Weavers.
Old World Weavers is responsible for several design projects at the White House which spanned the terms of nine presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton.
Iris Apfel will be 95 years young on August 29th, 2016. With an Instagram following of over 300,000, she is definitely not your average 95 year old.
As her latest Instagram posts remind us, her style is eclectic. With big, bold statement pieces and vibrant colors, her personal style is just that-personal.
One of Iris’ most recognizable pieces are her glasses. The oversized black round frames have quickly become her “it” accessory. She says, “People would say to me, ‘Why are they so large?’ and I would say because they are better to see you. And that would shut them up.”
With her own accessory line for HSN, you’ll find her signature statement pieces. The collection is filled with bold, bright colors, chunky bracelets, all consuming necklaces and large earrings.
With her big 95th birthday approaching, we wanted to pay homage to the taste-maker by sharing some of favorite Iris Apfel outfits & quotes!
