In the three years since luxury flash sale site Gilt Groupe arrived on the Internet scene, it has virtually transformed the way we shop and live. This revolutionary force of fashion was, no surprise, founded by two savvy (Harvard Business School MBAs) and stylish friends, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson and Alexis Maybank. In addition to her Harvard pedigree, Wilkis Wilson burnished her resume with high-powered jobs at Louis Vuitton and Bulgari before teaming up with Maybank to transform the landscape of the designer sample sale forever. Here, the amazing businesswoman—and new mom—shares her surprising treasure: a piece of children's art work hand-painted by her mother.
Tell us how you came to own this precious object.
My mother painted this in honor of the birth of my son. She included all of my favorite childhood characters as well as newer ones that didn’t exist when I was a kid but that she predicted my son would love, like Elmo!
How do you live with your heirloom?
The painting hangs in my son’s room and we both look at it everyday. I love the bright, happy colors.
Who in your life has most influenced your personal style and taste?
My mother, without a doubt. She is very classic, but has a flair for glamour. She is Cuban, after all.
Fill in the blank: Whenever I look at___________, I can’t help but smile.
My son Conrad.
What’s the best part of your day?
At home: time with Conrad. On the job: meeting new people and understanding what makes them tick.
What’s the most memorable gift you’ve ever received?
My engagement ring, no doubt.
What was your last purchase that you believe will mean something to you ten years from now?
Artwork. My husband and I purchased some beautiful paintings on our honeymoon in Bali. We bought them with the hope that we will continue to love them through our many future life stages.
