A Possession Obsession |
Laura Brown

Inspired by the deeper meaning attached to treasured possessions, jewelry designer and portrait photographer Monica Rich Kosann set out to chronicle the stories of such cherished belongings. Spending time with more than sixty-five intriguing personalities, celebrities, and thought leaders resulted in A Possession Obsession: What We Cherish and Why, a stunning photographic collection that transcends materialism and explores the secrets and stories behind beloved personal items.
This reoccurring column is an ongoing passion of Monica's to continue to chronicle people with what they cherish. Each month, a new person will be featured as a glimpse into A Possession Obsession.

How did you come to own your possession?
It was a picture my dad had mixed in with a lot of old photographs in a box. When he was dying of cancer in 2010, I was going through his stuff. This picture just says everything about him - he would talk to anyone. It makes total sense that this dairy farmer, in his homemade Brown's Cows T-shirt, would befriend two random mustachioed acrobats who are shot out of cannons. he just looks delighted.

How do you live with your heirloom?
It sits on the mantelpiece in my living room. When I moved apartments two months ago, it was the first thing I brought to the place. It's like he's right there.

Who in your life has most influenced your personal style and taste?
Oh gee, probably the profession I've chosen, rather than anyone specific. I am exposed to so many things - you try out different things, but you end up refining what makes you...you. I guess they call it editing!
