A Possession Obsession: Pamela Fiori

Pamela Fiori, the 16-year editor-in-chief of Town & Country, has always understood the luxury of giving. Which comes as no surprise when you learn that this publication was founded in 1846 by editors who believed in the importance of stewardship and that Fiori, herself, is a board member of UNICEF and founding co-chairperson of the nonprofit's Snowflake Project. In fact, the magazine's first female editor-in-chief has taken that message to heart, dedicating every June issue completely to the topic of philanthropy.

That said, Fiori knows how to enjoy a little mindful luxury, which, for her, takes the shape of the beautiful Mediterranean island of Capri (she just published a book about her favorite getaway in September). Here, Fiori shares with us the one item (her special heirloom) that goes to Capri with her every time, plus how grateful she is to have such giving people in her life.

Tell us how you came to own this precious object.

"My precious heirloom is my grandmother's diamond ring. My grandfather gave it to her in the 1950's as a peacemaking gift: They were often at odds with each other and not on speaking terms for months at a time. The ring was a let's-kiss-and-make-up effort. It worked...for a while.

I thought it was beautiful and gazed at it longingly every time I was with her. One day, when I was visiting her (by this time, she was old and ailing), she asked my aunt to take it out of the jewelry box so she could give it to me. She died two weeks later. She knew the end was near and wanted me to have it."

How do you live with your heirloom?

"I wear it most often whenever I take a flight. It's as if being high up in the air at 30,000 feet somehow brings me closer to her and puts me under her protective and angelic wing. When I forget to take it with me, I am uneasy during the entire flight."

Who in your life has most influenced your personal style and taste?

"I was, and still am, an avid moviegoer. In the 1950's, during my formative years, I was heavily influenced by stylish Hollywood stars such as Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and, later, Sophia Loren."

What was the most memorable gift you've ever given or received?

"When my husband, Colt, and I were married for 10 years, he created a video of our life together. It took him a hundred hours to do. We watch it every year on our anniversary. We've been married for 27 years."

[Fill in the blank] Whenever I look at __"my niece Caitlin and nephew Zachary"___I can't help but smile. "They are the lights of my life."

What's the best part of your day?

"Late afternoon, particularly on a Saturday or Sunday, when I can take a nap listening to music. I cherish that time of day."

What was your last purchase that you believe (or hope) will mean something to you 10 years from now?

"Nothing I have ever bought can compare to what has been given to me by my husband, family, and friends."
