Artsy natures run deep in the family of young filmmaker Liliana Greenfield Sanders, 29. Grandfather is the painter Joop Sanders—founding member of the American Abstract Expressionists; her uncle is the sculptor John Sanders; her father is the famed photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and her sister is the painter Isca Greenfield-Sanders. Liliana has garnered quite a creative reputation of her own, however, with short films like Ghosts of Grey Gardens, Anna and Adelaide and soon, her first full-length feature project. The East Village born and raised filmmaker shares her favorite things with The Fine Art of Family.
Item I own that gets better with age: John Sanders' copper and bronze sculpture. The metal changes and just becomes more and more beautiful over time.
Best vintage buy on eBay: An old Felix the Cat clock for my nephew Hudson
My secret to looking timeless: Wearing a lot of black
Best souvenir I’m glad I brought back home: I have an old touristy sweatshirt that I bought when I was visiting Beijing in 1997. It says "I climbed the Great Wall of China". I wear it constantly.
Trend I hope becomes classic: Motorcycle boots
Place I love to visit that’s rich in history: Anywhere in Italy
Book I have read more than once: The Brothers Karamazov
Fave old-school song on my iPod: "Over You" by the Velvet Underground
Smell that makes me feel most nostalgic: Pine needles. Which is weird because I really hated camp.
Film that I can watch over and over again: Happiness by Todd Solondz
Favorite bedtime story as a kid: My dad used to make them up and the characters always slightly resembled my sister and me, but we'd be dogs or horses or our names would be different. I loved that.
Favorite family recipe: My mom's polenta stuffing and my dad's cornmeal pancakes
Tastiest mom-and-pop shop that’s been feeding me for years: Russ and Daughter's on Houston Street. I'm obsessed with their Scottish Salmon and their chicken liver.
How I like to keep in touch: I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I like texting. It's just fun to come up with more concise, clever ways to say things.
Best advice I’ve ever received: "Everything in moderation, including moderation"
Unofficial home away from home: My sister's apartment. We live in the same building and I like to drop in unexpectedly to eat with my two nephews.
What I’m currently coveting: Overpriced, oversized, thick cashmere sweaters.
I couldn’t live without: My family, which includes some of my friends
