Monica Rich Kosann x MFA Boston

Introducing our collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This collection of necklaces is inspired by the "tsuba" - the guard for the swords that were used by the Japanese samurai, which are featured in the MFA's Arts of Japan galleries. The decorative and functional designs represent protection and the spirit of a fearless warrior, themes that we find relevant for the modern woman.

The History of the Tsuba

"Warrior clans were the rulers of Japan from the 1150s until the 1860s, and so their swords became status symbols as well as weapons. The tsuba is the part that fits between the hilt and the blade to protect the hand, and it was often beautifully decorated."

The Butterfly

A symbol of the Taira clan, one of the most famous ancient warrior clans, the butterfly has a short life, but a glorious one, and represents transformation.

The Crane

Symbolizing good luck, the beautiful Crane, in the elegant "dancing crane" pose, or "Mai Tsuru", is accented here with two diamonds.

The Turtle

As turtles live so long, they represent a long life filled with good fortune and luck.
