In 1978, Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during a U.S. Open match.

Play was temporarily halted.

The idea of the Tennis Bracelet was born, and it became a part of our fine jewelry lexicon. For decades, Chris has not been part of merging this origin story to a Tennis Bracelet Collection.

“I remember everything about that day. The green court. The white lines. My diamond bracelet and the dripping sweat of competition.”

Our Story

DISCOVER

When Chris Evert took center court at the U.S. Open tennis championship in 1978 in Forest Hills, Queens, on her wrist was a bracelet commonly known as a diamond line bracelet.%expanded-mobile%

By all accounts and photos from the period, that bracelet was made of white gold and diamonds. She lost her bracelet during the play of the match, and play was halted until she found it.%expanded-desktop%

After the match, these types of diamond line bracelets were given a new name: the tennis bracelet. It would be the tennis bracelet that would become a common style in so many women's jewelry boxes and many of these would be white gold tennis bracelets, much like the one Chris was purportedly wearing. Over time, yellow gold tennis bracelets also became immensely popular. When we launched our women's tennis bracelet collection with Chris Evert, the first collection she had been a part of in the forty years since that founding moment, we knew we wanted to capture the look and feel of a variety of metals. We included a broad grouping of sterling silver tennis bracelets, and when they incorporated our rhodium finish (which is also commonly used on all types of white gold), the silver bracelets evoked the look and feel of white gold tennis bracelets. Eventually, we would also add a group of white gold diamond tennis bracelet styles, staying true to the metal Chris wore during those years. These white gold diamond tennis bracelets would be offered in 18k gold, with the ethically sourced, superior grade of natural diamonds we have used since our beginnings as a brand two decades ago. These white gold diamond tennis bracelets would incorporate a variety of round and fancy cut diamonds, and custom designed versions can be created for clients through our MRK Custom Design studio.

Tennis Bracelet CE FAQs

How do I pick the right tennis bracelet?

At Monica Rich Kosann, our tennis bracelet collection was born from a very specific moment in time inspired by Chris Evert’s legendary match when the original “tennis bracelet” became part of history. We created the collection in collaboration with Chris Evert so by choosing one of our styles, you are selecting a piece that is truly part of the Authentic origin story.

Each design reflects that heritage, from emerald “green court” settings to white diamond “lines of play,” and a signature pear-shaped diamond dripping with movement. Choose a piece that doesn’t just sparkle, but one that’s Finally Authentic™ and part of your story.

How should you wear a tennis bracelet?

Wear your tennis bracelet solo for a stand-alone moment, or stack it with bangles, a watch, and cuffs for a layered look. Tennis bracelets transition seamlessly from day to night, casual to formal. It’s the kind of piece you never need—or want—to take off. When your bracelet is on your wrist it should move naturally, almost like a second skin.

Can I take a shower with my tennis bracelet on?

While Monica Rich Kosann designs pieces for everyday wear, it’s never a bad idea to remove your tennis bracelet before showering. Soaps, shampoos, and hard water can dull the shine over time. To preserve its sparkle and integrity, remove it during bathing, swimming, or heavy activity—your bracelet will thank you.

Should a tennis bracelet be gold, silver, or platinum?

There’s no single “should.” It comes down to your style and how you plan to wear it. Gold offers warmth and usually pairs nicely with heirloom pieces. Silver is great for those who favor cooler tones. Let the metal reflect your personal story.
