In 1978, Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during a U.S. Open match.
Play was temporarily halted.
The idea of the Tennis Bracelet was born, and it became a part of our fine jewelry lexicon. For decades, Chris has not been part of merging this origin story to a Tennis Bracelet Collection.

The history of the tennis bracelet begins with a gold tennis bracelet. In 1978, world champion Chris Evert was playing a match on the center court at the U.S. Open in Queens, New York. On her wrist was a gold and diamond line bracelet, which fell off at some point during the match. Play was halted until she found it.%expanded-mobile%
While being interviewed by journalists after the match someone asked about what had taken place with the tennis bracelet? The rest was jewelry history. %expanded-desktop%
From that moment, the classic diamond line became known as a tennis bracelet, and more specifically as a gold tennis bracelet. These gold diamond tennis bracelets steadily increased in popularity with the 18k gold tennis bracelet becoming the most luxe gold version. For more than four decades gold tennis bracelets would become part of many jewelry collections, but one element was missing. Chris Evert, the world champion whose moment inspired this iconic tennis bracelet category, had never been involved in the creation or design of a collection. In 2022, we at Monica Rich Kosann teamed up with Chris Evert to create a gold diamond tennis bracelet offering. Called The Tennis Bracelet- CE, with the notations Born 1978, Finally Authentic, the collection is offered in 18k gold and Sterling Silver. There are yellow gold tennis bracelet styles and white gold tennis bracelets, but all are offered in 18k gold. This collection of women’s tennis bracelets features distinct design elements that mirror Chris’ recollections of that day. Chris remembered the green court – symbolized by a green emerald on tsavorite stone in every style; the sweat of competition- symbolized by a hanging pear shaped diamond or white sapphire; and the white lines – which of course is where rows of diamonds and white sapphires come into play. Tennis Bracelet CE FAQs
At Monica Rich Kosann, our tennis bracelet collection was born from a very specific moment in time inspired by Chris Evert’s legendary match when the original “tennis bracelet” became part of history. We created the collection in collaboration with Chris Evert so by choosing one of our styles, you are selecting a piece that is truly part of the Authentic origin story.
Each design reflects that heritage, from emerald “green court” settings to white diamond “lines of play,” and a signature pear-shaped diamond dripping with movement. Choose a piece that doesn’t just sparkle, but one that’s Finally Authentic™ and part of your story.
Wear your tennis bracelet solo for a stand-alone moment, or stack it with bangles, a watch, and cuffs for a layered look. Tennis bracelets transition seamlessly from day to night, casual to formal. It’s the kind of piece you never need—or want—to take off. When your bracelet is on your wrist it should move naturally, almost like a second skin.
While Monica Rich Kosann designs pieces for everyday wear, it’s never a bad idea to remove your tennis bracelet before showering. Soaps, shampoos, and hard water can dull the shine over time. To preserve its sparkle and integrity, remove it during bathing, swimming, or heavy activity—your bracelet will thank you.
There’s no single “should.” It comes down to your style and how you plan to wear it. Gold offers warmth and usually pairs nicely with heirloom pieces. Silver is great for those who favor cooler tones. Let the metal reflect your personal story.
