In 1978, Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during a U.S. Open match.

Play was temporarily halted.

The idea of the Tennis Bracelet was born, and it became a part of our fine jewelry lexicon. For decades, Chris has not been part of merging this origin story to a Tennis Bracelet Collection.

Our Story

DISCOVER

The story of the tennis bracelet began in the summer of 1978. The U.S. Open women's tennis championship matches were being played in Forest Hills, in the borough of Queens in New York, City. %expanded-mobile%

World Champion Chris Evert was playing a match on center court when she lost what was then known as a diamond line bracelet and play was halted until she found the bracelet. After the match, the idea of the women's tennis bracelet was coined, and those types of diamond line bracelets would forever be referred to as their new name: the Tennis Bracelet.%expanded-desktop%

In 2022, fittingly in conjunction with the U.S. Open schedule, we launched The Tennis Bracelet – CE, a collection designed in collaboration with Chris Evert. It was the first time in four decades that Chris was associated with the creation of a tennis bracelet collection. It would celebrate that founding moment at the U.S. Open. It would be a collection Born 1978, and Finally Authentic. While the women's tennis bracelet is generally associated with styles in yellow gold or white gold with diamonds, included in the Tennis Bracelet - CE collection would be a broad offering of silver tennis bracelets. These sterling silver tennis bracelets would be created with white sapphires to offer the sparkle associated with diamonds but at a more accessible price point. They would be a sterling silver tennis bracelet collection that captured Chris’ memories of that day at the U.S. Open: the green court, symbolized by a green tourmaline accent stone in each silver tennis bracelet; the white lines of the court, embodied in our rows of white sapphires; and finally, the sweat of competition which we capture with a hanging, pear-shaped white sapphire in a bezel setting. Other sterling silver tennis bracelets are also offered with aquamarines, pink sapphires, and exquisitely cut rock crystal.

Tennis Bracelet CE FAQs

How do I pick the right tennis bracelet?

At Monica Rich Kosann, our tennis bracelet collection was born from a very specific moment in time inspired by Chris Evert’s legendary match when the original “tennis bracelet” became part of history. We created the collection in collaboration with Chris Evert so by choosing one of our styles, you are selecting a piece that is truly part of the Authentic origin story.

Each design reflects that heritage, from emerald “green court” settings to white diamond “lines of play,” and a signature pear-shaped diamond dripping with movement. Choose a piece that doesn’t just sparkle, but one that’s Finally Authentic™ and part of your story.

How should you wear a tennis bracelet?

Wear your tennis bracelet solo for a stand-alone moment, or stack it with bangles, a watch, and cuffs for a layered look. Tennis bracelets transition seamlessly from day to night, casual to formal. It’s the kind of piece you never need—or want—to take off. When your bracelet is on your wrist it should move naturally, almost like a second skin.

Can I take a shower with my tennis bracelet on?

While Monica Rich Kosann designs pieces for everyday wear, it’s never a bad idea to remove your tennis bracelet before showering. Soaps, shampoos, and hard water can dull the shine over time. To preserve its sparkle and integrity, remove it during bathing, swimming, or heavy activity—your bracelet will thank you.

Should a tennis bracelet be gold, silver, or platinum?

There’s no single “should.” It comes down to your style and how you plan to wear it. Gold offers warmth and usually pairs nicely with heirloom pieces. Silver is great for those who favor cooler tones. Let the metal reflect your personal story.
